DAY 2

Join the group at our hotel for the next three nights, the Claridges Hotel in Delhi. Enjoy the day at lesisure to relax, take a dip min the outdoor pool or explore the local area.

DAY 3

Today we enjoy a guided tour and explore the historic city of Old and New Delhi. We travel as the locals do during our visit and even include a cycle rickshaw ride in Chandni Chowk, a spice trading market! During our guided tour to also see many important buildings including Jama Masjid - one of Asia's largest mosques, Rajghat the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi the "Father of the Nation", Humayun's Tomb, the India Gate and President's House.

DAY 4

This morning we board the broad-gauge steam service from Delhi to Rewari Junction and visit the Rewari Railway Heritage Museum. Built in 1893, it is the only surviving steam loco shed in India and houses some of India's last surviving steam locomotives including the functional 1855 steam locomotive, the Fairy Queen which was restored here.

DAY 5

This morning we board the broad-gauge steam service from Delhi to Rewari Junction, picnic lunch box is included, and we visit the Rewari Railway Heritage Museum. Built in 1893, it is the only surviving steam loco shed in India and houses some of India's last surviving steam locomotives including the functional 1855 steam locomotive, the Fairy Queen which was restored here.

DAY 6

We enjoy a guided city tour of Amritsar this morning, home of the Golden Temple - the spiritual and cultural centre of the Sikh religion that attracts more visitors than the Taj Mahal! Afterwards we visit the poignant site of the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, reflecting a time of when India was under British Rule. In the afternoon we can walk through the local buzzing markets of Amritsar before travelling to The Attari-Wagah border to witness the 'lowering of the flags' ceremony, a daily military practice that the security forces of India and Pakistan have jointly followed since 1959.

DAY 7

After breakfast we travel by coach to Pathankot where the narrow-gauge section of the Kangra Valley Railway commences. The mountain railway lies in the sub-Himalayan region and covers a distance about 100 miles. We stop for an early lunch in an open garden resort before we continue our journey to Palampur, best known as the tea capital of North India. We arrive at our hotel for the next 3 nights, the RS Sarovar Portico in the late afternoon.

DAY 8

Today we are in for a treat as we have a special charter ride on the narrow gauge from Palampur to Baijnath Paprola station on the ZB66 class steam locomotive. In the afternoon, we visit the famous ancient Lord Shiva Hindu Temple of Baijnath with stunning views of the Dhauladhar mountain range.

DAY 9

This morning we drive 40 minutes to Baijnath Paprola railway station and board the 09.50 diesel train to Joginger Nagar arriving at 11.25. We return via the same service departing at 12.20 and arriving in Baijnath Paprola at 13.50 before transferring by coach to Palampur. The afternoon is free to relax and enjoy the panoramic views from our hotel or alternatively we can take a stroll around Palampur market.

DAY 10

After breakfast we travel approximately 2 hours to Dharamsala, surrounded by cedar forests on the edge of the Himalayas and the spiritual home of Dalai Lama. During our day we visit the main Dalai Lama Temple and enjoy a stroll on the Mall road. We also visit the St Anglican Church in McLeod Ganj and stay at the nearby Fortune Park Moksha Hotel.

DAY 11

We enjoy a relaxing morning in Dharamsala and in the afternoon we board our flight to Delhi for an overnight at The Lalit Hotel in the city.

DAY 12

This morning we travel on one of the fastest trains in India, the Gatimaan Express. We depart at 08.10 and arrive in Agra at 09.50. During our day we visit the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Agra Fort and one of the world's most celebrated structures, the spectacular Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is a white marble mausoleum believed to have been completed in 1653 at a cost of approximately £550 million at todays prices! In the afternoon we drive 1 hour south to Dholpur where we stay overnight at the Raj Niwas Palace.

DAY 13

An exciting morning awaits us, as we enjoy a boat ride on Chambal River famous for rich wildlife including resident alligators! Our safari river cruise is a bird-watchers paradise as the Chambal riverbanks are the ideal habitat for many migratory and resident birds. Following our exciting morning we drive south-west into Rajasthan state to the Ranthambhore National Park. We stay in Ranthambhore for the next 2 nights at the Sawai Vilas.

DAY 14

Our Indian adventure continues today as we venture into the Ranthambore National Park on an early morning safari and afternoon safari by jeep or canter truck. The National Park is most famous for its many tigers but also home to a huge variety of other animals, birds and reptiles (please note it is very likely but not guaranteed to see tigers during the safari).

DAY 15

This morning we spend the morning relaxing in the National Park and enjoy an early lunch in the resort and before we travel to Jaipur. We will stay like royalty for the next 2 nights at our base in Jaipur at the exquisite Narain Niwas Palace, a stunning heritage hotel.

DAY 16

Today we travel from Jaipur to the Amber Fort and enjoy a return jeep ride to the fort that is renowned for its combination of remarkable Hindu and Mughal architecture. We also visit the City Palace and Jantar Mantar. In the afternoon we visit to Hathi-Gaon elephant village where we can experience bathing an elephant and getting to know more about these fascinating jumbos. We have time to shop in a local bazaar brimming with colourful local handicrafts and jewellery before we return to our hotel.

DAY 17

After breakfast we transfer to Jaipur airport for our short flight to Delhi and where we check into the Aloft Hotel close to the airport. We then visit the National Rail Museum that opened in 1977 and discover its extensive collection. The museum focuses on the rail heritage of India and has great examples of steam, diesel and electric locomotives. We return to hotel for our farewell dinner.

DAY 18

Following our incredible Indian adventure, we say goodbye and travel the short distance to Delhi airport for our return flight to London Heathrow.
