Where are Railtrail Tours based?
Our offices are in the town centre of Leek, in the Staffordshire Moorlands. You are more than welcome to visit us to make your reservation. However, we would appreciate your telephoning to make an appointment beforehand.
Do you operate a loyalty scheme?
Yes, due to the longevity of the company we find that we have little need for public advertising as the majority of our new bookings come from ‘personal recommendation’. If you are an existing Railtrail traveller and recommend us to a friend or relative who hasn’t travelled with us previously, please ensure that when they complete their booking form they enter YOUR name and postcode at the foot of their booking form. When they have completed their holiday you will receive a discount voucher (valued at £75 for each new client that you have introduced) to be used towards the cost of your next Railtrail holiday.
Your Tour Fare
British Holidays
To calculate the cost of a British holiday inclusive of rail travel from your nearest mainline station please consult the “Fares Table” listed on each tour. Look down the table for the region that you wish to travel from. The amounts shown alongside are the Adult fare sharing a twin/double room, based on First Class and Standard Class Travel. If you have a Railcard (i.e. Senior Citizen, Disabled, Young Persons) the minus amount shown in the RC column can be deducted from the tour fare.
European Holidays
The fares quoted are from St Pancras International. However as we are an official rail ticket agent for the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) we can provide you with connecting rail tickets to London. If you wish to travel independently to the tour base (e.g. by road or air) your tour fare will be reduced accordingly. Your fare will also be reduced if you have free rail travel concessions. Please contact us for details.
First Class Rail
First Class rail travel to and from the tour base is available for most British tours at a supplementary fare. These are shown in each tour Fares Table. European tours are normally quoted as Standard Class rail - see tour itineraries - however First Class Eurostar and European Rail is available at a supplementary fare. Please contact us for details.
Single Rooms
Single travellers are made extremely welcome on our tours. However, there is a single room supplement for each tour as shown in the tour itinerary beneath the Fares Table.
Extra Nights
Subject to availability you may, if you wish, extend your holiday at either the start or end of most British tours. Please see the tour Fares Table for details.
Holiday Insurance
We consider travel insurance to be essential. It is therefore a condition of booking that you are adequately insured. Full details of our Holiday Insurance cover and prices are detailed in the Booking Conditions. If you choose not to use our travel insurance it is a condition of travel that you provide details of your insurers, their emergency contact number, and your policy number before departure.
How many people will there be on our tour?
An average group size is 25 – 30 passengers.
What is included in our tour fare?
All rail travel throughout the holiday. Connecting road travel from station to hotel (where necessary). Accommodation and meals as detailed in tour itinerary. All excursions and admissions to attractions. Services of an experienced Tour Manager. VAT and local taxes where applicable.
What meals are included?
British tours include half board accommodation with breakfast and choice table d’hôte evening meal. European tours may be bed & breakfast, half board, or a mixture of both. The reason for this is that it is our policy to use hotels actually in famous towns and resorts. So, sometimes we feature bed and breakfast accommodation on some or all of the days to give you the opportunity of enhancing your enjoyment of your holiday by dining out in the resort itself. Each tour clearly states in the itinerary what meals are included.
What is not included?
Normally we do not include lunch unless specifically stated in the tour itinerary.
Is my money safe?
In accordance with the provisions of article 7 of the EC package travel directive 90/314, tour monies are held in a specially designated trust account until completion of the holiday. All rail tickets issued by Railtrail Tours Ltd are guaranteed good for travel by the Rail Settlement Plan Ltd.
How often will I receive a brochure?
When you request a brochure you will receive details of the current tours programme and, subsequently, a copy of this main brochure for each of the next two years. If you have not travelled with us by that time we will assume you do not wish to travel and will automatically delete your details from our database. Once you have travelled on a Railtrail holiday you will receive this main brochure as soon as it is published for the next 5 years. Each time you travel with us you automatically recommence at year one.
How do I book?
Please complete the booking form and send it to us together with a deposit of £75 PER PERSON for British tours and £150 PER PERSON for European tours, plus insurance premiums where applicable. The balance of fare is due 8 weeks before departure date (13 weeks before departure date for European tours). A balance request is forwarded to you in due course. For bookings made less than 8 weeks before departure date (12 weeks for European tours) the full amount is due at the time of booking.
