The Peak District & Derwent Valley – an area of magnificent scenery delighting visitors since the Victorians fell in love with spa towns. This wonderful tour is packed with variety and interest from Matlock Bath, classical Chatsworth, steam trains, trams and the inventiveness of Arkwright’s mills, through to the novelty of a ghostly walk and a meeting the Mermaid.

DAY 1

Travelling by train to Derby and the original Midland station hotel recently refurbished to a high standard whilst retaining all of its original grandeur. After an early evening meal we raise our spirits with a guided ghost walk culminating with a condemned man’s supper at the original Derby Gaol. (D)

DAY 2

Travelling into the heart of the Peak District our leisurely circular coach tour takes us to Ashbourne before heading into the hills to meet our mysterious mermaid. We then continue over the Peaks for a guided tour through the subterranean temple that is Poole’s Cavern (an easy walk), before taking an afternoon break at the Pavillion Gardens, Buxton. We return to Derby over the high peaks. (B,L,D)

DAY 3

The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire’s Chatsworth House is one of Britain’s finest stately homes and is a national treasure for its art, architecture and gardens. We then take an afternoon break in beautiful Bakewell, home of its namesake pudding - not tart! Later in the afternoon we step back in time to enjoy a steam hauled train ride on Peak Rail into Matlock. (B,D)

DAY 4

Experience industry of yesteryear in the Derwent Valley as we visit the World Heritage designated Richard Arkwright’s Cromford Mill. We take take a tram ride into the past at Crich Tramway Village, nestling high up in the heart of Derbyshire overlooking the famous Derwent Valley, it is a lovingly restored period ‘village’ that is also home to the National Tramway Museum. We then continue to Haddon Hall - the most completely perfect medieval house - before concluding our day at a working 18th century flour mill. (B,D)

DAY 5

Travelling by train to Matlock Bath for sightseeing at this riverside Victorian resort, including a spectacular cable car ride to the Heights of Abraham offering stunning views over the Derwent valley and a guided underground tour, retracing the footsteps of miners to experience the spectacular caverns they left behind. After returning to Derby by train its time to bid farewell and head for homeward destinations. (B)
