Experience the hues of autumn on this wonderful Lakes & Mountains rail tour - dramatic landscapes, spectacular rail journeys and the nostalgia of yesteryear. Based in the historic city of Carlisle we time travel from the Roman days of Hadrian, through cobbled streets of Brontë country and the steam age, to reflections of the Lake District in the waters of Windermere.

 |
DAY 1
Travelling by train to the historic border city of Carlisle and our tour base at the ideally located Hallmark Hotel adjacent to the station and alongside the ancient city walls. (D)
DAY 2
By train to Windermere. After enjoying sightseeing, we relax aboard one of the graceful lake steamers and cruise to the southern tip of the lake where we board our vintage steam train* to journey through the picturesque Vale of Leven to the village of Haverthwaite and traditional afternoon tea in the station buffet. We return by rail to Carlisle. (B,T,D)
DAY 3
We roam by rail through the northern fells of the Tyne Valley to the market town of Hexham. After browsing the stalls we have an afternoon viewing Hadrian’s Wall, bringing history alive at Vindolanda - a fascinating Roman fort and settlement - and the Roman Army Museum. (B,D)
DAY 4
A day of stunning sea and landscapes. We sit back, relax and meander by train around the whole of the Cumbrian coast. To Ravenglass for a steam train ride* on the famous ‘Ratty’ through glorious Eskdale; we continue the wonderful coastline rail journey through Grange-over-Sands and around Morecambe Bay to Lancaster, before completing our circular rail tour north, up over Shap summit and back into Carlisle. (B,D)
DAY 5
A day at leisure to discover the history of Carlisle. This 2,000 year old border city has been the scene of many invasions and battles. Today explore Tullie House Museum and Art gallery, Carlisle castle - frequented by Mary Queen of Scots - and the glorious 14th century stained glass window in the medieval cathedral. (B,D)
DAY 6
One of the holiday highlights as we take the train over the world famous ‘Settle & Carlisle’ line to Keighley. Here step into the time capsule that is ‘The Railway Children’ line and ride behind steam into the hills of Brontë land. From Haworth we return over the Settle & Carlisle line - past the peaks of Whernside, Ingleborough, and Pen-y-ghent – across Ribblehead viaduct and hopefully a glorious sunset as we cross the summit at Ais Gill. (B,D)
Day 7
Bidding farewell to Carlisle we travel by train to homeward destinations. (B)
* In the unlikely event of the steam train being unavailable we reserve the right to substitute a diesel train or undertake the journey by road coach.
