DAY 2

Leaving Stirling, our train journey heads through the stunning scenery of Perthshire on the Highland Line as we travel to Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands. We then continue by private coach through coastal Sutherland and the brooding and magnificent landscapes of Caithness to the historic estuary town of Wick, a former Viking settlement. We enjoy free time to explore this historic little town, once famous for being the busiest herring port in Europe. We continue north to John O'Groats for a photo-stop at the furthest inhabited place on mainland Britain. From here we travel to the short distance to Gills Bay where we board our ferry to Orkney, we arrive late evening and check into our hotel for three nights, the Kirkwall Hotel.

B, D

DAY 3

After a leisurely breakfast we meet our local guide for a walking tour of Kirkwall including the magnificent St Magnus Cathedral and Bishops Palace, both dating back to the 12th century and the 17th century Earl's Palace. In the afternoon we visit the northernmost single malt Scotch whisky distillery in the world, Highland Park dating back to 1798. We enjoy a fascinating guided tour and get to sample a wee dram before returning to our hotel.

B, D

DAY 4

Staying on Orkney allows us to tour the island at leisure. Our guided tour of Orkney includes the Churchill Barriers, the wonderful Italian Chapel, built by prisoners of war; Skara Brae, the astonishingly well-preserved Neolithic village, and the awe-inspiring Ring of Brodgar stone circle. After a day exploring this unspoilt region of natural beauty, we settle down to dinner in our hotel.

B, D

DAY 5

Today begins with our late morning return ferry crossing from St Margaret's Hope to Gills Bay. Our coach then continues the journey southwards taking the lovely coastal route through Caithness and Sutherland, skirting the Firths of Beauly and Cromarty en route to Inverness. Here we join the Highland Line, one of the country's most beautiful, climbing into the Cairngorms before descending through Perthshire to our hotel for two nights, the Stirling Highland.

B, D

DAY 6

A short rail journey whisks us to Edinburgh Waverley, where our Blue Badge Guide awaits to introduce the highlights of the city's 'Royal Mile'. An afternoon at leisure in Scotland's proud capital enables you to visit the castle, relax on the Grassmarket or indulge in a little retail therapy on Princes Street.

B, D

DAY 7

We bid farewell to Stirling as we make our way homeward.
