Tuesday 9 April 2024
We will depart London St Pancras by Eurostar to Brussels connecting onwards via Frankfurt to Gotha for an overnight hotel stay where we will enjoy an evening meal together.

Wednesday 10 April 2024
After breakfast, we will discover the beautiful city of Gotha in our privately chartered vintage tramcar before travelling by train to Dresden where, using a transport day ticket (included), we ride on the funicular railway and the amazing, suspended railway - the Schwebebahn. Offering beautiful views and a unique perspective of the city, the Schwebebahn is a marvellous example of engineering and construction and, having started in 1901, is the oldest hillside suspension railway. This evening, we enjoy our meal together at the hotel.

Here we have also included a guided tour of the Bertsdorf locomotive shed plus we will take lunch at the Hotel Oybiner Hof. On return to Dresden, we will dine at leisure.

Friday 12 April 2024
After breakfast this morning, we take a local train to Freital-Hainsberg for a ride behind steam over the 16-mile Weisseritztalbahn line to the spa town of Kipsdorf. Meandering up the Weisseritz Valley on the longest serving tourist train through varying scenery, this narrow-gauge railway is considered one of the most beautiful railway lines in Europe - a ride not to be missed. We will continue our day with a visit to Dresden Transport Museum to learn the fascinating history of human mobility, from the past right up to the present day and beyond. The railway transport exhibition provides an exciting journey back in time with walk-in carriages and locomotives that we can enter and soak up the atmosphere of past times.

Saturday 13 April 2024
Today our highlight is an exhilarating main-line steam hauled journey from Dresden main station, details and route to be announced nearer the time. An entrance ticket to the festival is also included where we can expect fascinating displays, informative presentations, model trains, historic and modern locomotives, and more. Many railway societies will have stands here alongside a temporary roadside narrow-gauge railway giving rides along the site plus the normally closed sheds with further locomotives and stock will be open to explore.

Sunday 14 April 2024
We experience another breathtaking main-line steam trip today before travelling by rail along the banks of the Elbe to Bad Schandau. Taking a ferry across the river, we sample the bucolic Kirnitzschtal tramway which runs along country lanes and through the valley of the Kirnitzch River to the beautiful Lichtenhain Waterfall and return.

Monday 15 April 2024
After breakfast today, we travel by railcar along the scenic Sehma Valley to Cranzahl where a day of steam awaits on the fabulous 11-mile long, 750mm gauge Fichtelbergbahn to the ski resort of Oberwiesenthal - the highest town in Germany. Both the stoker and the locomotive must work hard on this route which features grades as steep as 1 in 30 where some stations can only be reached at full steam. One of the highlights (and photo opportunities) of this ride is the crossing of the mighty 110m long, 23m high Hüttenback Viaduct at the entrance to Oberwiesenthal station. Here, we also enjoy a guided tour of the locomotive shed before returning to Dresden for our final evening meal together at a local restaurant.
