A great Railtrail steam tour that has much to offer as a summer holiday for enthusiasts and partners alike.
We feature an amazing variety of steam lines and a plethora of differing gauges, locomotives and rolling stock - all explored in a relaxing style enabling everyone to unwind and enjoy themselves on a magnificent holiday.
DAY 1
Sunday 31 July - Travelling by Eurostar to Brussels then, via Cologne and Hamburg to Rostock where after registering at our hotel we have a welcome evening meal at a local restaurant.
DAY 2
Monday 1 August - A day to relax from our outward travels in historic Hanseatic city of Rostock by the Baltic Sea with a picturesque harbour and white sandy beach. We have an introductory guided tour in the morning with a privately chartered vintage tram followed by an afternoon free for exploration where you might like to make the short journey to Bad Doberan for a pre-tour introduction to the street running steam on the Molli.
DAY 3
Tuesday 2 August - We continue our adventure at probably the most popular line in Northern Germany: a full day on the Molli with unlimited train rides between Bad Doberan and Kühlungsborn, including the famous street running. Also included is a visit to the loco shed with a photographic session in front of the shed. In the afternoon we have made a special arrangement with the railway whereby the train will 'perform' at selected points for photographers on our private lineside bus.
DAY 4
Wednesday 3 August - We travel by train to Prora and Putbus for a day of steam, including sandwich lunch, on Rügen Island's 750mm Rasender Roland line from Putbus to Göhren and return with included day rover tickets to enable you to have multiple journeys, plus a guided visit to the loco shed at Putbus. After returning to Rostock we are free to dine at leisure.
DAY 5
Thursday 4 August - We travel by train to Hamburg to view 'the Harz Mountains to the Americas' at Hamburg's amazing "miniatur-wunderland", the largest model railway in the world, which has cost 10 million Euros! This amazing venue is stunning and requires a number of hours to fully appreciate both the magnitude and detail of the attraction. We then continue by train to Hamburg-Bergedorf and our base at the H4 Hotel where we enjoy a group dinner together.
DAY 6
Friday 5 August - Our 'steam' this morning is of the sailing type as we take a steam boat cruise on the Alster aboard the unique 1876 built St Georg viewing the city skyline. We then return to the rails travelling onto Bremen and a welcome evening meal at the conveniently locate InterCity Hotel.
DAY 7
Saturday 6 August - We have timed the tour to coincide with the steam railway festival at Bruchausen-Vilsen where the metre gauge line became Germany's very first heritage railway on its opening in 1966. A full day rover facility will enable you to enjoy this super line and its excellent collection of locomotives and rolling stock.
DAY 8
Sunday 7 August - Our exploration of Northern Germany's heritage railways concludes with a day of steam on the rarely visited 22 kms, standard gauge Delmenhorst-Harpstedter Eisenbahnfreunde e.v.
DAY 9
Monday 8 August - We conclude our tour travelling homeward via Cologne and Brussels to London St Pancras International.
